CNU’S Mugna creative writing center to host Bathalad event

CREATIVE writers from the Bathalan-ong Halad sa Dagang (Bathalad) Sugbo, an organization founded by institutions and individuals in Cebuano letters, will hold their golden jubilee event at the Tandang Sora Hall of Cebu Normal University (CNU) on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019.

The Mugna Creative Writing Center of CNU—headed by professor Reynaldo Caturza—is the co-organizer of the event.

Mugna has been molding aspiring poets, fictionists and other creative writing students of CNU in the past 10 years.

The program will start at 10 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. It will be hosted by two promising writers—John Rolly Son, editor-in-chief of Ang Suga, the official student publication of CNU; and Kenneth Michael Baba, associate editor for internal affairs of Tug-ani, the official student publication of University of the Philippines (Cebu) Cebu.

During the event, the top 10 accomplished young writers in the past 10 years will be recognized. Also, 18 creative writers who have passed on will be honored.

Bathalad Sugbo was founded on Aug. 19, 1969 by poet-doctor Mel Allego, a native of Tuburan, Cebu and the “Garbo sa Sugbo (Pride of Cebu)” award recipient.

Bathalad Sugbo’s stalwarts, multi-awarded poet-fictionists Ernesto Lariosa and Lamberto Ceballos, are expected to deliver their lectures on the need for local literature to flourish and the future of Cebuano Literature.

Lariosa will also launch his first-ever poetry book on the same day.

University of San Carlos-Cebuano Studies Center director Hope Yu, who champions Cebuano Literature, will also give a talk during the event.

Young writers from CNU and members of TINTA-UP Cebu will also participate in the gathering without charge. (S)
