Briones: ‘Victim of circumstance’

On the go

MANY parents think their child can do no wrong, despite what other people say.

Cut classes? You just smile and shake your head. No, our Boboy wouldn’t do that. Bully other people? Our little angel, Lester? He wouldn’t hurt a fly. Drink alcohol? Junjun retches at the very smell of beer.

So your child goes to mass every Sunday. He is kind and generous. He is very respectful. He is, short of saying, God’s gift to mankind.

And yet your child is arrested by a joint operation conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (Pdea) for allegedly selling party drugs like ecstasy. Which was what happened to Tagbilaran City Administrator Edi Borja.

His son Eric John was nabbed inside the Crescent Ville Hotel on Gallares St. in Bohol’s capital.

According to NBI Bohol Director Renan Oliva, they had placed the younger Borja under surveillance for the last two months after they received reports of someone selling ecstasy to teens.

“Most of his targets are women and because of the many tourists in the emerging party scene in Panglao, we are on the lookout for party drugs,” said Oliva.

The report doesn’t give much away about the suspect’s background except that he also works for the City Government as a casual employee.

There’s a photo of Eric John being handcuffed that is posted on the SunStar Cebu website.

He looks well dressed. Clean cut even. Well, in his line of business, he has to look presentable. Decent, at least. After all, his clients have money to burn. What else do you call spending between P3,000 and P5,000 on a tablet that makes you... ecstatic?

Unless, of course, you’re a woman. Authorities say Eric John has a soft spot for members of the opposite sex. He sells the tablet for a lower price, at P1,500, to them.

There you go.

He may be an alleged purveyor of illegal drugs, but hey, at least he’s a gentleman.

This might explain why the suspect’s father remains incredulous at his son’s present predicament.

“We are still in a state of shock right now. All I can say is that my son is a very good man and obedient son. He is just a victim of circumstance,” the elder Borja told SunStar Cebu in a text message.

His son being good and obedient was never the issue, though. I don’t know about you, but I never heard of Adolf Hitler being disrespectful to his parents or to those close to him and yet he plunged the world to a war that wiped out almost an entire generation in the western hemisphere.

Then again, what else is a father supposed to do but to defend his son?
