Tax campaign intensifies school info-drive

THE Office of the City Assessor (OCA) has continued its school-based advocacy dubbed as “Enhancing Tax Consciousness among Students through Information Campaign.”

Now on its 13th year, OCA is not letting-up in its quest to educate students about the importance of taxes, specifically real property tax (RPT).

Students were deemed effective in conveying to their parents the benefit of paying RPT.

Personnel of the OCA go around the city’s public high schools, including Iloilo City Community College, to enhance tax consciousness among students.

They conduct lectures and presentations before classes in schools. After the lectures, a test is given to measure the level of learning received by the students.

Almost 500 students from nine public high schools in Iloilo benefited from the tax information and education campaign for the period July 18 to August 14, 2019, namely: Fort San Pedro National High School, RG Hechanova National High School, Mandurriao National High School, Ramon Avanceña National High School, Bo. Obrero National High School, Melchor L. Nava Memorial National High School, Iloilo City National High School, Iloilo City Community College and La Paz National High School.

The OCA team will visit Jaro National High School on August 15; Buntatala National High School, August 16; Sped-Integrated School for Exceptional Children, August 20; Jalandoni Memorial National High School, August 22; and Tiu Cho Teg-Ana Ros Foundation Integrated School, August 23.

A culminating activity is held every December to give recognition to participating schools and deserving students who performed well during the conduct of lectures and examinations.

OCA assistant department head Cheryl Chan said the activity is year-round and has long been practiced by the office.

“We are consistently recognized by the Bureau of Local Government Finance (BLGF) Region VI; in fact, we are already in the Hall of Fame for Best Practices by an office,” she said.

OCA was also cited as the number one revenue generating unit in Western Visayas in 2018. (PR)
