Tan: The priceless gifts of wisdom

Tan: The priceless gifts of wisdom

Proverbs 3:14-26

It is not only necessary but it is also very timely that as we study about wisdom, remember that wisdom is a gift we receive from God more than a goal to achieve by our own strength. We cannot earn the favor of God by trying to be wise; we walk in wisdom because of God's favor. To ask for wisdom is humbling, it shows our desperation; to receive wisdom makes us very dependent on God and to apply wisdom sharpens our discernment. While wisdom is a free gift, it is not cheap! It is very precious; therefore, this priceless gift of wisdom must be experienced, enjoyed, and explored! Wisdom disturbs before it delivers, disciplines before it can be a delight...it will be very personal.

1. Wisdom is more precious than all riches combined (vv 14-18)

There is no hypocrisy involved here. It is not saying that riches are not valuable nor are not needed; rather, it is saying that wisdom outweighs the value of them all.

* Desire it! (14-15) to desire wisdom is to be awed by its value and to explore its many facets in life.

* Delight in it (vv 16-18) delighting in wisdom leads us to the actualization and appreciation of its perks.

2. Wisdom is a heavenly gift for a skillful and meaningful journey on earth (vv19-23)

Wisdom is made in heaven for the purpose of making the journey here on earth a little bit of heaven. There are two gifts of wisdom which we need to appreciate and appropriate: Gifts of beauty and design (Wisdom was there during the creation of the world. God used wisdom to create the beauty that we see around us). Gifts of sense and soundness (Wisdom was there and will be there at the crossroads of life where the confusing reality of living sets in. It is during these confusing times that wisdom grants us sense and soundness of mind (vv 21-23) when many powerful and influential voices are heard that wisdom leads you to hear the most important voice of all, the voice of the Giver of wisdom.

3. Wisdom provides spiritual calmness in turbulent times (vv 24-26)

* Sound sleep (Rest)

* Shield from destruction (Refuge)

* Security from subtle traps (Rescue)

Prayers:

Abba, don't allow me to be allured by the preciousness of many things compared to the richness of true wisdom. Set me free from the materialistic addiction, and from my Narcissistic tendencies. Set my spirit free, oh Lord, that I might worship thee. Lord, have mercy on me, a greedy sinner. Amen

Abba, open my eyes and activate my spiritual senses that I may appreciate the beauty of wisdom. Help me pause and take time to appreciate your creation and like a child let me see the wisdom of my creator. Let me enjoy calmness offered by wisdom that in spite of a stormy journey, there is peace in my heart, soundness in my sleep, security in my abode, and godly sense in my decisions. Lord, hear my prayer. Amen.

Abba, remind me that these gifts of wisdom must be desired, and joyfully received, diligently nurtured and unselfishly shared. As I graciously receive these gifts, help me diligently point others to you, the giver of these gifts. Lord have mercy. Amen.
