100 woodpushers to join 2nd Aguirre chess tourney

MORE than 100 chess players in Negros Island are expected to see action in the forthcoming 2nd Antonio Ivan S. Aguirre Negros Open Individual Chess Championship.

The event is set to open on April 4, 2010 at the lobby of Top's Millennium Plaza Bowling Lanes, 10th Hilado Sts., Capitol Shopping Center, Bacolod City.

The four-weekend, seven-round Swiss system (one-hour 20 moves + one hour-to-finish-the-game) competition is open to all interested participants from all walks of life including Grand Masters, International Masters, Fide Masters and National Masters and will run until April 25.

Moreover, participants must be knowledgeable on how to record chess games through either the Descriptive English or Algebraic Notation and shall provide their own tournament-size chess sets and chess clocks.

Prizes await the top finishers as follows: P5,000 plus 42-inch, four-legged "King" trophy for the champion; P4,000 plus 36-inch, four-legged "Queen" trophy for the first runner-up; P3,000 plus 30-inch, four-legged "Rook" trophy for the second runner-up; P2,000 plus 27-inch, four-legged "Bishop" trophy and third runner-up and P1,000 plus 24-inch, four-legged "Knight" trophy for the fourth runner-up.

Meanwhile, the sixth to 20th placed finishers will also receive chess set with mat and bag.

On the other hand, the top scorers in the female category will get P700 for first place plus gold chess medal; P500 for second place plus silver chess medal; and P300 for third place plus bronze chess medal.

The top three scorers in the Kiddies (13 years old and below) category will also get P500 for first place plus gold chess medal; P300 for second place plus silver chess medal; and P200 for third placed plus bronze chess medal.

Registration fee is at P200 per participant with deadline on April 2 at 6 p.m., without extension, at the tournament venue.

This chessfest, organized and officiated by the Game Royale Aficionados of Negros, Inc. headed by Dr. Alfonso Teorima in partnership with Top's Millennium Plaza Bowling Lanes, Inc., is one of the big chess events to watch out this year and the second consecutive championship sponsored by US-based Negrense chess patron and book author Antonio Ivan s. Aguirre, CPA, CFE, CSI, MBA.
