City forms task force vs stinky jails

THE Cebu City Council has formed a task force that will address the stench coming from human waste at the New City Jail and the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC). The issue has affected residents of Barangay Kalunasan since 2015.

The task force will be led by Councilor Nestor Archival as the chairman. He will have Councilors Eduardo Rama, Joel Garganera, Renato Osmeña Jr., Jerry Guardo, Alvin Dizon, Raymond Garcia and Niña Mabatid and Vice Mayor Michael Rama as members.

In a privilege speech on Aug. 13, 2019, Archival said Kalunasan has been placed under a state of calamity so City Hall can use its funds to solve the four-year-old problem.

Archival said City Jail has 5,800 inmates, while CPDRC has 2,448 and their wastes are discharged daily through an open canal, leading to the stench.

“There are 8,248 inmates who have been found to discharge their waste daily at the open canal that runs through the Langob shrine,” said Archival.

The councilor inspected the site with the City Health Department and engineer Joel Biton of the Department of Public Services. (PAC of Superbalita Cebu/ML)
