City Government gives cash aid to tornado victims

THE Iloilo City Government gave Wednesday, August 14, a total of P390,000 financial assistance to 48 families affected by the August 3 tornado in Mansaya, Lapuz District.

Eighteen families who houses were destroyed received P10,000 each, while 30 families whose houses were damaged received P7,000 each.

Mayor Jerry Treñas said the support will provide relief and help residents recover from disaster.

Tornado is a violently rotating column of air that reaches from the base of a cloud to the ground in funnel shape, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In other areas, it is called a violent thundersquall, Pagasa added.

The tornado struck at 12:12 p.m. of August 3, three minutes before a squall or sudden squeal of strong winds and big waves capsized pumpboats M/B Chi-chi and Keziah in Iloilo-Guimaras Strait. (PR)
