National master (NM) Bob Jones Liwagon clinched the Kadayawan Chess Festival 2019 Philippine Executive Chess Association (Peca) National Championships Mindanao Leg held recently at the Damosa Market Basket in Lanang, Davao City.
Top seeded Liwagon tallied 5.5 points in the six-round Swiss System format chessfest.
He was unbeaten in six matches, only drawing his first round with Roncar Raffy Tivar before beating Jose Barba, Jr., National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) regional director James Infiesto, Lyndon Sombilon, Ramil Langamon and NM Levi Mercado.
Tivar bagged the runner-up honors by earning five points followed by Cipriano Magalso (4.5) who placed third and Jose Dionisio Guevarra, who bested two other four-pointers via superior tiebreaks, in fourth.
The event served as qualifying for the national championships at Casa Pilar Beach Resort in Boracay on November 16 and 17.MLSA
