DepEd officials inspect school buildings not yet covered by insurance

THE education officials have checked which public school buildings in Talisay City, Cebu are not yet covered by insurance policies.

The inspection was conducted by the Department of Education (DepEd)-Talisay City Division officials after they learned that the rooms damaged by a recent fire were not insured.

On Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, Mayor Gerald Anthony Gullas met with DepEd-Talisay City Division head Arden Monisit to discuss with the latter the repair of the rooms at the Talisay City Central School.

The fire started in the stockroom of the school on Monday, Aug. 12. The flames damaged portions of five classrooms in the three-storey building.

Most of the damage was in the form of broken jalousie blades and melted electrical wires.

Gullas said they have found other ways to repair the rooms as the building is not yet covered by insurance.

The mayor learned that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) turned over the building, but not included were the documents on the structure.

If there is any damage within a year after the completion of the building’s construction, the DPWH and its contractor will reportedly undertake the repair.

However, Gullas said he received a different reply from the DPWH. The agency, he said, may not do any repair.

The mayor asked the DPWH to turn over the documents so the City or DepEd can use its funds, or the DepEd can buy an insurance policy for the building. (From FMD of Superbalita Cebu/KAL)
