Y-Speak: Access for PWDs

ACCESSIBILITY is important for peoples with disability (PWDs). Hence, laws like the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons or the Republic Act 7277 was enacted. This was made in order to grant the rights and privileges for disabled persons in the country.

Some of the provisions stated in the constitution is the access to quality education and the assistance to disabled students. Disabled persons should be provided with ample opportunities to education and skill development. Academic institutions are encouraged to take any special needs into account especially when it comes to school facilities.

Malayan Colleges Mindanao, an academic institution in Davao City, is known for its excellent facilities for students, faculty, and staff which also cater to the needs of persons with disabilities. Each building in the school has elevators; two in the main building and four in the academic building. Ramps can also be seen around the campus for elevated areas. These important architectural details are very useful for physical disabilities.

However, there are also disabilities that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Mental health is one of the main issues in this generation and thus it is vital to create safe spaces for individuals who are in need of mental health services. MCM provides its students with counseling, coaching, mentoring, and consultation sessions which they can avail anytime they are in need of such services. They only need to go to the Guidance Office whenever they are free and a counselor will assist them. These will significantly aid in the students’ overall well-being because professionals will be able to assist them in their needs.

Another way in which the school supports their students is through courses like Understanding the Self (SS021) and the Life Coaching series (VE). These are of great help to encourage students to comprehend their individualities through self-introspection.

Disabilities, mental or physical, must not limit anyone to reach their full potential. This is why accessibility is key to creating equal opportunities for every person. (Allison Gomez, Malayan Colleges Mindanao Communication student)
