Cebu’s king, queen of running extend dominance

PRINCE Joey Lee continues to dominate the local running scene as he added another feather to his cap with a triumph over Kenyan Joseph Mururi in the men’s 12-kilometer race of the Cereb Go Green Run 2019 at the SM City Cebu parking area on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019.

Lee, a computer engineering graduate, breasted the tape in 39 minutes and 36 seconds to defeat Mururi by 13 seconds in a thrilling finish for the 12K title. Joseph Emia of Cebu City Rider Omega Team finished at a distant third with a time of 44:03.

The 23-year-old Lee is fresh from winning the mixed relay title in the Regent Aguila Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines. He was the runner for the Spectrum Team together with swimmer Micah Marie dela Serna and biker John Mier.

Lee said he’s getting ready for the Milo Marathon Regional Qualifiers in Cebu next month.

The comebacking Lizane Abella, on the other hand, extended her win streak to three races after finishing first in the women’s 12K category with a time of 51:42. She recently topped the ThreeSixty Pharmacy Run two weeks ago and won the Hunat Sugbu: Dagan Para ni Maning last month.

Abella, also a member of Spectrum Runners Club, left running late last year to give birth to her daughter, but she has slowly regained her old form since her return.

Cherry Andrin came second in 51:43 and Angel Estillore finished third in 1:01:23.

Kenyan Eric Chepsiror and Asia Paraasi bagged the men’s and women’s top honors in the 6K category with a clocking of 19:05 and 24:55.

Chepsiror won the men’s division over Florendo Lapis, who clocked in 20:32 and Michael Largo, who timed in 20:35. Paraasi outlasted Joanne Alinsunod and Antonette Velayo, who had times of 25:19 and 27:30, respectively.

Danny Digao crossed the finish line in 9:36 and was hailed as the fastest runner in the 3K race. Ariel Saballa finished second in 9:49 followed by Jovan Bensig in 9:53.

Geneciel Saballa ruled the women’s side in 11:33, beating Princess Jive Borneo who timed 12:03 and Jay Anne Luaña who clocked in 12:22. (RSC)
