IT IS not only the athletes and the school that should work for the sports community, but the parents should also be involved.

This was what Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu wanted to achieve when it held the forum Parents in Sports: Chill Lang Diha on Saturday morning, Aug. 17, 2019.

“We’d like to get the parents on board so we are all united and are all on the same path of our objectives for the school program,” said Rico Navarro, Ateneo athletic director.

Navarro noticed that the parents seem a bit out of the community and since their support is important, he felt the need to get the parents to join the community.

He said the three sectors—student athletes, the school and the parents—have to work together and unite to realize the vision and objectives the school wants to achieve.

“In the end, it is really just to form men and women for others the Ateneo way. It’s the best way we can support the student athletes,” Navarro said.

Navarro said the support of parents give student athletes and the school will help assure the success of the sports programs the school will initiate.

During the forum, parents were introduced to the school’s vision and plans, as well as the future programs related to sports.

Among the speakers of the forum was a mother of four athletes, Joy Diamante, who talked about a guide to parents in sports.

Diamante is a mother of three football players and a volleyball player. She said the best thing that parents can do to their children is to support their passion, or, in her case, the sports they are involved in.

“That’s the only way we can help them achieve their goals,” said Diamante.

She also said aside from the support, parents should teach their children the right values and lessons.

She said parents should not go after the reward that the children can get but the values they get from sports.

Another speaker of the forum, Noli Ayo, the athletic director of Ateneo de Davao University, encouraged parents to give a healthy kind of support to their children.

“We just want to make sure that the support is healthy. That it will not destroy relationships, that it will not be anchored on vested interests, but it will really be towards the community,” Ayo said.

Ayo said the parents should not only support their children but also the community that their children are in, adding that the community plays a big part in the success and formation of their children.

Ayo was glad that Ateneo was able to organize the forum, emphasizing that the collaboration between the school and the parents is important.

He hoped that SHS-AdC will continue to be a trailblazer in the field, not only in Cebu but also in Visayas.

He reminded the athletes who attended the forum to practice sportsmanship.

“We hope that other than just playing games and trying to beat each other in the world of sports, they will try to collaborate with each other in the world of life,” said Ayo.

With the feedback of the forum which was attended by about 150 parents, Navarro said they plan to continue such program, adding they will just arrange the schedules.

Navarro said they will continue to engage parents in all school activities.
