SOME might have been thinking that being fashionable is really costly. What they do not know is that there are several hacks they can adopt in order not to spend so much on fashion pieces.

I had the chance to talk to some friends who have some helpful “tipid” tips when it comes to dressing up.

For restaurateur-chef-beauty expert-philanthropist Cathy Binag, going back to basics is the key.

Her advice is for starting fashionistas to buy the basics whether in shoes or clothes. For women’s accessories, they must opt for black, white, red and nude.

She also advised “women with big legs” to never ever wear wedge shoes because it would just make them look even much bigger.

For men, the colors black, blue, beige and gray blue are the perfect choices for outfits.

“To look fresh whatever is your skin tone, you can use pastel color in powder pink, blue, yellow and peach,” she added.

Entrepreneur and business coach Karla Stefan Singson had the same thoughts with Ms. Binag. According to her, picking classy basics and neutrals does the trick.

“Avoid trends, stick with styles for your height and body type, skin tone,” she said. “Go for high quality key pieces. Mas ‘tipid’ in the long run.”

Writer-blogger Roberto Gumba shared that buying enough basics can help anyone mix and match with ease. Plains, dark and light-colored pieces surely result to savings.

“Para di masayang ang next na bongga paliton. Pwede ra ipares ana,” he pointed out.

Investment promotion professional Pauline Ferrero loves classic cuts and solid or plain colors.

“Invest in timeless pieces and accessories that fit many occasions so you don't have to buy each time. Have a few trendy ones to mix and update looks but keeping the style on the side of prim and lady-like para shabby chic lang ang peg,” she noted.

Personally, I have always been a “basics” person as well. My closet is full of plain white, blue and black pieces, especially when it comes to tops. I just mix and match them with different pieces of footwear and accessories depending on the occasion I am attending or where I am going.

Happy shopping!
