KBL’s Acosta may face charges (3:12 p.m.)

MANILA – Kilusang Bagong Lipunan’s Vetellano Acosta may face perjury and falsification charges after he allegedly made false entries in his candidacy papers, a poll official said.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Law Department director Ferdinand Rafanan said Friday that the poll body will start investigation on the allegations against Acosta.

"(He can be sued for) perjury because that's under oath and he alleged that he is a registered voter and hindi naman, he can be sued. It could also be falsification. Maybe these two criminal cases," Rafanan said.

Rafanan said a complaint should be filed before the poll body so they can act accordingly.

The Comelec en banc earlier declared Acosta as a nuisance candidate after siding with Jay Sonza, KBL's vice presidential candidate.

Sonza said Acosta claimed to be a registered voter in Precinct No. 6 in Tejeron village in Sta. Ana, Manila but there were no records to prove such c.

The KBL vice presidential candidate added that Acosta has not joined the party's campaign, not even once.

“The unfolding of events and the actions of petitioner Acosta during the hearings convinced us now to allow him to run would be of no good to the country as his candidacy only puts the electoral in mockery,” the decision of the commission cited. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
