USC student wins silver medal in China math contest

WILLIAM Joshua King of the University of San Carlos (USC) won a silver medal during the 19th China Western Mathematics Invitational (CWMI).

King was part of the four-member Philippine team that participated in the CWMI, held on August 11 to 16 in Zunyi City, Guizhou province in China.

The other three members of the team also won medals: Immanuel Josiah Balete, St. Stephen's High School, gold medal; Charles Justin Shi, Philippine Cultural College Caloocan, silver medal; and Fedrick Lance Lim, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, bronze medal.

Team leader Renard Eric Chua said participating teams came from different provinces in mainland China, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia and Kazakhstan.

Young Filipino math wizards also won seven other medals from two other China contests, the 18th China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO) and 16th China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad (CSMO), according to the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).

All three contests followed the math Olympiad format wherein students had to solve four different problems within four hours for two consecutive days.

“These Chinese math contests are very hard and we congratulate our Filipino students for their triumph,” said Dr. Isidro Aguilar, MTG president.

In the all-female math contest CGMO, held from August 10 to 15 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, the Philippine team won two silver and two bronze medals, said team leader Winsdy Marcos.

The winners were Vanessa Ryanne Julio, St. Jude Catholic School, silver medal; Gwyneth Margaux Tangog, Southville International School and Colleges, silver medal; Deanne Gabrielle Algenio, Makati Science High School, bronze medal; and Hiraya Marcos, Philippine Cultural College-Main, bronze medal.

The competing teams came from different provinces in mainland China, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Russia.

At the 16th CSMO, held from July 28 to August 2 in Ji'an City, Jiangxi province, Filipino students bagged bronze medals.

The winners were Charles Justin Shi, Philippine Cultural College-Caloocan; Issam Wang, Manila Science High School; and Stephen James Ty, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.

The Philippine team was headed by team leader Kerish Villegas. Other teams came from different provinces in mainland China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Indonesia and Taiwan. (From PR/SunStar Philippines)
