Spectrum Runners finds a new prodigy in Casinillo

JEROME Casinillo showed he’s one of the rising local prospects after topping the men’s 10-kilometer race of the Fit 2 Run on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019 at the Pescaderos Road, Cebu Business Park.

Casinillo, a native of San Francisco, Camotes Island, clocked 33 minutes and 54 seconds, beating Samuel Vanvalkenburg and veteran long-distance runner Engbino “Sano” Desederio, who clocked 34:14 and 34:31, respectively.

The 19-year-old Casinillo decided to pursue running in mainland Cebu.

“He’s willing to join our group and to pursue running so he traveled from Camotes to here for our time trial. He was an independent runner in Camotes before coming here,” Spectrum Runners president Gerry Mayo said of Casinillo.

Casinillo joined Spectrum about a year ago and now trains under road king Prince Joey Lee. He also studies computer engineering and is a scholar of Mayo Clinic and Sto. Niño Dialysis Center.

“We noticed his improvements since training under Lee. I hope he continues to do better,” Mayo said.

On the other hand, Melody Perez ruled the women’s division in a dominating fashion with a time of 41:35. Janine Kamansi finished second in 47:07 and Diana Balungkas was third in 47:20.

Renmarch Gonzaga and Ellen Pelet bagged the men’s and women’s titles in the 5K category with a clocking of 17:27 and 25:45.

Rain Del Corro and Armando Tives Jr. finished behind Gonzaga with times of 21:53 and 23:43, while Gwendolyn Undang and Janice Wagar clocked in 26:20 and 28:45 to complete the women’s podium finishers.

In the 3K category, Darwin Locaylocay topped the men’s division in 9:25, outdoing Kevin Boyles who came in 10:41 and Julius Ababa who crossed the finish line in 12:26.

Laurence Garcia won the women’s side in 10:43, Eria Culango finished second in 12:49 and Diamoza Acosta was third in 16:29. (RSC)
