VICE Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte lauded Monday, August 19, the athletes who brought pride and honor to the city in regional, national and international competitions during the 34th Kadayawan Sports Festival Athletes' Recognition 2019 at Davao Convention and Trade Center.

Duterte, in his message, said, "I just want to tell you that each time you go out of Davao City and you represent our city, we are proud of you. The local government is proud of you."

He then urged them to continue setting a good example to other children their age, to stay away from vices, particularly drugs.

"Focus on something that can be productive for you like sports. You are setting a good example. I congratulate you for that, maayo na inyong ginabuhat (what you're doing is good)," he added.

Duterte, who serves as acting mayor since his sister Sara Duterte-Carpio is on medical leave, also assured them that the City will be behind them whatever they want to pursue or whenever they want to reach higher goals.

"We will support you," he said, also thanking the coaches who trained the athletes on the values of teamwork, fairness, discipline and respect.

According to Cindy Cruz of the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO), the City allocated P4.135 million cash incentives for Batang Pinoy Mindanao Leg 2019, 10th BIMP-Eaga Friendship Games (Brunei Darrusalam) and Arafura Games 2019 (Darwin City, Northern Territory) medalists.

Gold, silver and bronze medalists in international meets, she said, is equivalent to P30,000, P20,000 and P10,000, respectively, while Batang Pinoy Mindanao gold, silver and bronze winners will take home P10,000, P8,000 and P5,000.

"Whichever is higher, if the athlete won three golds and two silvers, he or she would get the cash incentive intended for one gold and the coach will also receive the same amount," Cruz told SunStar Davao in an interview.

Swimming sensation Lora Micah Amoguis, a gold medalist in BIMP Eaga Games, Arafura Games and Batang Pinoy, received P70,000, while younger sister Liaa Margarette, a Batang Pinoy champion and BIMP Eaga Games silver medalist, got P30,000. The latter also received P12,000 gold incentive for Palarong Pambansa.

While Lora intends to save her cash incentives, Marga said she will give the money to her parents to somehow help with their expenses.

BIMP-Eaga Games and Arafura Games jumping gold medalist Mark Anthony Caseñas, for his part, said: "Dako kaayo og tabang kanang naa silay mahatag kahalipay after sa hago namo. Worth it among training dili lang sa incentives pati sa tapok-tapok murag mas dako impact og dasig gihatag sa amoa (This recognition is a big boost after our hardship in training. The training is worth it, not just the incentives but holding a gathering like this has more impact and encourages us to work harder)."

Meanwhile, the Department of Education awarded around P1.3 million to Davao City's Palarong Pambansa medalists, giving P12,000 for gold, P10,000 for silver and P8,000 for bronze.
