Search for pet-friendly places planned

YOUR pets may soon be welcome in more places in Baguio City.

In a move by Councilor Elaine Sembrano, a search for the most pet-friendly places has been proposed.

“Baguio is home to numerous pet owners as evidenced by the presence of more than three social media groups, all based in the city, working towards protecting and upholding the welfare of animals and encouraging responsible pet ownership, among others,” Sembrano said.

Sembrano, in the proposed law, is appropriating P100,000 for the planned annual contest.

The lady councilor said animal welfare advocates in the city including tourists have expressed their desire for more public and private establishments that are pet-friendly.

Sembrano said the term “pet-friendly” is not simply a new craze, in fact, travel company booking.com has even provided its clients with the 10 best pet-friendly hotels/transient houses in the city while website kardogshians.com presented seven famous Baguio restaurants that are likewise pet-friendly and these are said to be constantly increasing.

The city official added institutionalizing an annual search for the most pet-friendly establishments in the city will not only encourage more pet-friendly businesses but would also be an avenue to widen information dissemination of Republic Act (RA) 8485 and RA 9482 as well as matters concerning animal welfare, care, control, and even responsible pet ownership, among others.

The Animal Welfare Act of 1998 provides that the State shall protect and promote the welfare of all animals.

Search for the most pet-friendly establishments is proposed to be celebrated every month of March.

A seal for the most pet-friendly establishment will be given to the winners as well as plaques and citations to be determined by a search committee, headed by the mayor.
