THE Pañeros pulled off a clinical 97-73 win over the Dissenters Bad Boys on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019 at the Capitol Parish Gym to clinch the No. 1 spot in the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Cebu Basketball League First Conference.
The Pañeros finished the elimination round with a clean 7-0 (win-loss) record and will carry a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals against No. 8 seed Young Lawyers Association of Cebu (YLAC).
Barrytone Busi torched the Bad Boys with his 27 points. He got the needed support as five of his teammates finished in double figures.
Gilbert Arrabis added 15 points, Franklin Manching contributed 14, Niño Rey Retuya chipped in 13, Nilo Balorio handed 12 and William Mañus poured in 10.
Lito Otiz scored 19 in a losing effort for the Bad Boys, who settled at fifth place with a 3-4 card.
The defending champions Gilas Defenders, on the other hand, ended the elimination round on a winning note as they downed the Spartans, 99-87.
Van Ligutan exploded for 38 points, Christopher Ang finished with 27 points and Irish Dwight Remedio chalked up 13 points.
The defenders bagged the No. 2 seed and will face seventh-seed Rebels in the quarterfinals.
Nate Garcia led the Spartans with 25 points, Redemtor Regis added 20 and Matt Medalle had 15.
In the other game, the Cebu Lex Idols defeated the Aniceta Red Vipers, 106-81.
Edwin Estorgio finished with a game-high 30 points for the winning team.
Reman Manubag handed 16, Fermin Pepito 15, Tommy Yu scored 11, while JP Francisco and Francis Pepito contributed 10 points each.
Rene Abcede and Giovanni Sususco led the Red Vipers with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
The Idols finished the elimination with a 4-3 record, good for fourth place. The top four teams will have a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals. (RSC)
