Limpag: School spirit

WHEN the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. season opens on Aug. 31, 2019, a select group of students from the member schools will be deployed to help boost school spirit among the students.

No, they won’t be deployed as cheerleaders for the games but will be working behind the scenes. They will be manning the cameras for the broadcast of the basketball matches and will be writing their own reports and feature stories for the league’s website.

There are so many stories in Cesafi and I hope these students can get them all.

This is a laudable move in the part of the league as it hits two birds with one stone. It increases the league’s presence online and also provides the students--mostly Mass Communications and Information Technology students--the perfect venue to try what they have learned in the classroom in an actual setting.

I and The Freeman’s big guy, Manny Villaruel, held a brief lecture on sportswriting for them two months ago and I hope we were able to give them what they need as they go about their jobs this season.

Like I told them that time, it won’t be easy. They will be the target of others who can think they can do a better job. And as the face of Cesafi--they will become the online faces of Cesafi--they need to respond and act accordingly.

I guess it will be kind of ironic for them; their job will be to spur school spirit among the students but they won’t be able to show any school spirit when they’re doing their jobs. If they’re behind the camera at courtside, it won’t do to cheer when your school scores.

That’s why this bunch of students have one of the most crucial jobs this season for Cesafi and it won’t be easy.

So show them some love. Better yet, show your school some love, too.

Go to the games. Cheer for your teams. Nothing boosts a team’s spirit more than seeing schoolmates cheering wildly in the stands. A school official or two watching in the stands can also boost a team, as what the University of San Carlos learned when a bigwig watched the football final last year.

So, wear your school colors and wear it with pride when the Cesafi season kicks off on Aug. 31. Check your team’s schedule and make sure to be there for all the matches.
