Cebu Ocean Park opens to the public

THE Cebu Ocean Park does not only offer entertainment value to the public, it also educates and makes people aware.

This is how Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella sees the marine park, which led him to appeal to the management to give discounts to public school pupils.

Prior to the opening, Labella had a meeting with the management where the latter agreed to provide modules for students regarding marine life.

The management had partnered with the Department of Education in creating modules for natural science.

“With this stage of technology and computers, our young people forget that there are more important things to learn in life and one of these is our respect for the sea, our love for the environment and consciousness of the living things underneath the ocean,” said Labella in his speech during the media launch of Cebu Ocean Park on Friday afternoon, Aug. 23, 2019.

Labella considered providing a subsidy for the 190,000 elementary school students from public schools in Cebu City to experience the facility.

He said it would be sad if “we cannot share this beautiful site to the students.”

“We are not asking for free (entrance). We are just asking for a big discount, Mr. Lim,” said Labella in his speech, addressing Lim Chee Yong, Cebu Ocean Park president.

Meanwhile, the mayor said the marine park’s opening will open the city to more business, which will generate more employment.

He also thanked Lim for hiring residents from Cebu City, adding that majority of the employees are from the city.

The first of its kind outside Metro Manila, the facility hosts the largest oceanarium in the country.

“My heart is full of happiness seeing this facility,” said Labella.

Lim, a Singaporean developer who is also the developer of Manila Ocean Park, hopes the facility will make the public aware of the environment.

Located at the South Road Properties, Cebu Ocean Park will have its soft opening on Saturday, Aug. 24, and will be in full operation by November. (JJL)
