Road drainage occupied by informal settlers cleared

ROAD canals in Angeles City’s entertainment district which were occupied by informal settlers for more than two decades were cleared by village leaders.

Village Chairman Tony Mamac said constructed makeshift shanties and houses on top of the canals made the waterways hard to declog causing flash floods during heavy rains.

“For more than 20 years, informal settlers occupied the drainage system along Quezon New Valley Street which causes flooding in the area every time it rains,” Mamac said.

After receiving a notice from the village, some of the settlers voluntarily dismantled their respective houses.

“Some of them sought our assistance. After the demolition, our environment team headed by Dok Manuel Tolentino collected all the debris,” the village chief said.

The area is almost 90 percent cleared, according to Mamac, who said that they are set to conduct declogging and fogging of the cleared canals.

“Next is the declogging and fogging of the drainage to ensure that no dengue-carrying mosquitoes will exist in the area where two schools, Balibago Senior High School and Subic Day Care Center, are located,” the barangay chairman said.

Mamac thanked the tricycle drivers and residents for helping the barangay officials clear and clean the road.

“If the program is properly explained to the people, they will easily understood and even participate to make the area clean, clear and beautiful,” Mamac added.

President Rodrigo Duterte and the Department of Interior and Local Government gave local officials three months to clear all roads in their respective jurisdictions.
