Jr. NBA clinic goes to Cebu anew

AFTER a successful run in Cebu last January, the Jr. NBA Philippines Program presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins will wrap up the Visayan leg at the new Sacred Heart Academy Gym in Mandaue City on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Some 300 kids, aged 12 to 14 are expected join the skills, aptitude and endurance challenges at the training camp designed to introduce youngsters to basketball fundamentals, competitive games, S.T.A.R. (Sportsmanship, Teamwork, Attitude, Respect) values and an emphasis on the importance of proper nutrition, supplementation and the need for proper hydration.

Last January 18, 53 youngsters trooped to the Sacred Heart gym for the free try-outs.

Cebu’s top coaches and also PBA Legends Elmer “Boy” Cabahug and Al Solis of the University of Visayas (UV) Green Lancers will top-bill the coaching staff for the March 7 meet, and will be joined by Jr. NBA appointed coach, PBA Legend Ronnie Magsanoc.

The participants are also set to undergo shooting skills challenges, dribbling and passing drills, endurance tests, fitness and agility tests.

Their vertical jump will be measured using the NBA’s state of the art “Just Jump System”, where kids will step on a precision mat, jump as high as they can, while a computer with laser mechanism measures the height of their vertical leap correctly.

The kids will also be given seminars on health and nutrition by Hi-Smart and the Science of Sweat, Hydration and Performance from Gatorade.

Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Top 10 campers will be chosen in Cebu and will qualify for participation in the Jr. NBA National Training Camp which will happen in Manila on April 16, 17 and 18, 2010 at the Jose Rizal University Gym in Mandaluyong City.

Ten campers will be chosen from Davao on March 14 and 20 more will be chosen in Manila and Luzon on March 21. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
