Labella creates Sinulog board to oversee next year’s festivities

CEBU City Mayor Edgardo Labella has issued an executive order (EO) creating the Cebu City Sinulog Governing Board (CCSGB) that will oversee Sinulog 2020 festivities.

The board will be composed of 24 members that will include the governor, eight mayor’s appointees, five trustees from the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI), two members of the City Council, director of the Cebu City Police Office, the Department of Education Cebu City Division superintendent, rector of the Basilica del Sto. Niño, director of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board 7, director of the Land Transportation Office 7, head of the Cebu City Transportation Office, director of the Department of Health 7 and the commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Central Command.

The mayor will head the board.

Vice Mayor Michael Rama, SFI chairman, has refrained from commenting on the EO.

SFI is a nongovernment organization that has been running the Sinulog festivities for some time with the support of the City Government.

According to the EO, “There is an imperative need for the creation of the board that will compliment the functions of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. and that will focus on coordinating with the concerned agencies and entities to ensure the smooth implementation of the core activities, thus

The CCSGB will organize the festival and its other activities. It will coordinate with concerned agencies to oversee the peace and order situation.

Aside from overseeing activities the SFI’s executive committee will plan, the board will also review and approve all the executive committee’s resolutions and actions to make sure these will be relevant to the success of the Sinulog.

The office of City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. will serve as the board secretariat. It will assist the CCSGB in implementing policies, tasks and decisions and in ensuring that there will be coordination and monitoring among concerned agencies so that the biggest cultural and religious event in the province will be a success.
