Olsim: Perception = reality

PERCEPTION is reality in this world. It has changed the affairs of humanity, and will continue to do so with its non-discerning population with frail human consciousness and memories. Perception is powerful – from propagandas that ignited world wars, to marketing promotions that raised the capitalists to the top, to election campaigns that put people in power. Whether we like it or not, perception is also what gets you into a relationship, or even a job promotion.

In this modern world of social media and digital information, perception has become a coveted commodity amidst the millions of competing information that passes our eyes in just a touch of a screen – the digital algorithm can only be swayed by “buying or sponsoring” its magic touch, or by that rare chance of getting a viral post. In a country ranked as the top social media consumer in the world, getting mass attention to even a bite-sized content has become a most-prized ability.

The “dialogue table”, that Mark Zuckerberg presented as the depiction of his business, has unfortunately succumbed to the rich and famous just the same – not any different from the traditional media that he wanted to change. In the end, the voices of the ordinary users are drowned by sponsored content, and by those personalities with millions of mystified followers. Except, if the user gets more attention to his or her information.

Whatever it is, the information that we wish to give the people, is the reality that they will consume. That is why there is a DDS who primarily exist to defend President Duterte from criticisms, that is why Mayor Isko intends to inform the people of his day to day actions through social media, that is why Raffy Tulfo is now seen as a savior.

Information constantly displayed influences our perception, and perception is equivalent to reality. If no one posts about your work, then no one will know about them, if you do not defend yourself from unfair projections, then you will be seen as a villain (until you decide to vindicate yourself). In this very judgmental social media world, perception is king, and perception is reality.

August is the most profound month for me. It is not only because of the constant rains that make me reflect about my existence, but also because of my personal experiences during this month that made me who I am today – aside from having romantic heartbreaks in August when I was younger, my father died in August, and my first child was also born in August.

The rush of experiences in August is uniquely a tread along memory lane that, strangely, makes me feel alive. After this month, the season moves closer to the time of giving, caring, and barbecues...then the New Year. Time surely flies fast.
