Stakeholders approves market development

DEVELOPMENT of the city market is in the works.

Baguio City Councilor Mylen Yaranon said stakeholders of the public market have agreed on initial plans for zoning the area to improve and set into place development.

Yaranon, chair of the committee on public works, said relocation of areas has been approved by stakeholders after a series of meetings in coordination with city officials.

The lady lawmaker said initial plans for the wet market section will be moved to better manage sanitation has been okayed as well as moving the fruits and vegetables sections to more strategic areas.

Under the still to be perfected market development plan, an area for loading and unloading of passengers for jeepneys has been created to lessen traffic towards Harrison Road, allot space for senior citizens to sit as well as market goers to lounge in. A space will also double as an area to place the night market, if plans continue.

Yaranon together Councilor Philian Weygan–Allan has set into place the market space for development long stalled by legal matters.

Allan has started talks with vendors to streamline needs and note what needs to be done with the social aspect of the market development.

Yaranon said the development plan will soon be presented and discussed further.

Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong is keen on setting into place the long delayed development of the city market, after announcing moves to halt talks with Uniwide.

Uniwide Sales and Realty Corporation failed to modernize the space despite a contract with the city and has been embroiled in a legal war between the city and market stakeholders.

Uniwide was deemed by the Securities and Exchange Commission to be incapable of finances, thus, making it unfit to implement the city project but the city has yet to legally rescind the contract.

Magalong said plans the city will undertake development with Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda, chair of the committee on laws is now working to study and resolve the impasse caused by the blotched Uniwide deal.
