Tell it to SunStar: Much to live on, much to live for

(Closing remarks during the Parp 20th anniversary celebration on Aug. 25, 2019 in Cebu City)

IN A gathering such as this, it seems only befitting that we recommit ourselves to the ideals of the Philippine Association of Retired Persons Inc. (Parp)--to serve as we have served--as espoused by our late founder, Amado F. Cabaero, who steadfastly stood in the forefront to bring to national attention the plight of some Social Security System/Government Service Insurance System (SSS/GSIS) pensioners and other retirees or the elderly as a whole.

It is indeed a pleasure to be in each other’s company today and for always, as it sustains and keeps us ever on the go, in the momentum of living, as we contemplate on what we could possibly contribute to Parp’s vision and mission.

While we have to admit that we, senior citizens, are often regarded as recipients of assistance with such kind of concern often misconstrued as charity, yet in all aspects, I instead look upon this as compassion—a matter of instilling in the national consciousness the welfare of the elderly, as what our Cebu City Government is doing by providing this fresh affirmation of raising the morale and dignity we deserve as senior citizens.

In parting, let me say these few liners: Retirement is wonderful if we have these two essentials--much to live on and much to live for.

And to those already within this interesting age of senior citizenship, do not resent growing old—we know many had been denied this privilege when they died young.

Let us consider our graying hair not just as a symbol of wisdom and experience, but rather proudly as a badge of honor.

Lastly, one surefire formula for living to be a hundred or more—just keep breathing and enjoying life to the full.
