AMID the prevailing threat of dengue and leptospirosis, the Archdiocese of Manila on Friday, August 30, issued an Oratio Imperata (obligatory prayer) for the healing of its victims and the protection of those without it.

According to Circular No. 2019‐37, Manila Archdiocese Chancellor Reggie Malicdem directed all parish priests, rectors, chaplains, and superiors of religious communities in the prelature to observe the mandatory prayer beginning Sunday, September 1.

"Because of the alarming number of those afflicted by dengue fever and leptospirosis in the country, His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle is requesting all of us to pray for the healing of those, who are sick and for the protection of everyone from these and other illness," said Malicdem.

He said that the Oratio Imperata is to be prayed kneeling after the Post‐Communion Prayer in all Masses in the Archdiocese of Manila starting Sunday, September 1.

Malicdem said the "Oratio Imperata for Dengue Fever and Leptospirosis" is made available both in English and in Tagalog.

Earlier this month, the Department of Health declared a "national dengue epidemic" due to the rising number of dengue cases in the country.

Based on the latest data, dengue cases reported in the Philippines have reached more than 208,000 from January 1 to August 10.

On the other hand, a total of 981 leptospirosis cases were recorded all over the country from January to August 3.

This was, however, lower than the 2,618 cases of leptospirosis reported during the first seven months of 2018. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
