USLS primes Shakey’s V-League title bid

THE University of St. La Salle (USLS) is looking forward to grab the crown this year as they set to compete in the most prestigious volleyball tournament in the country in the 1st Conference of the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 starting April 11 to May 2, 2010 at San Juan Arena in Metro Manila.

Giving up the titles they won last year in the National University Games (UniGames), Western Visayas Prisaa and National Prisaa, Roger A. Banzuela, the former USLS Varsity Sports Office (VSO) head and president of the Negros Occidental Volleyball Association (NOVA) disclosed that the USLS Lady Stingers will be seeing action in the ten-team volleyball tournament if only to prove that they are a team that won a series of titles in the past.

Banzuela also added that preliminary matches are scheduled to run April 11-May 2 while on May 4 to May 13 will be the quarterfinals where the top four teams from each bracket will play round robin en route to the semis on May 16-20 while the finals is set on May 23-27.

USLS has been a consistent campaigner of the Shakey’s V-League but has so far failed to capture the title despite its remarkable volleyball program in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental.

Shakey’s V-League has been the company’s contribution to volleyball development in the country for seven years now.

Meanwhile, 10 teams seeing action are seven strong Manila-based collegiate volleyball squads and three from the Visayas including USLS. Among these teams are (Manila): University of Sto. Tomas (UST), Far Eastern University (FEU), Adamson University (AdU), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), College of St. Benilde (CSB), Lyceum University and San Sebastian College (SSC). The two other squads from the Visayas are University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and Southwestern University (SWU) both of Cebu.

USLS is also slated to compete in the National Open Volleyball Invitational Championship (Men & Women) slated this March 20-27, 2010 at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, but the tournament was scrapped due to lack of corporate sponsors.
