Magsayo ends long lull, eyes title at home

AFTER a long lull in his career due to a contractual battle with his former promoter, Mark Magsayo finally gets his career back on track as he fights for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Asia Boxing Council featherweight belt in his hometown of Tagbilaran City, Bohol. Magsayo is up against former world champion Pungluang Sor Singyu on Aug. 31 at the Bohol Wisdom Gym.

“We know that he (Pungluang) is a fighter that’s why I trained hard for this. I know we need the stamina,” said the 24-year-old Magsayo.

Magsayo was forced into a hiatus for more than a year after a contractual battle with ALA Promotions. He returned with a knockout win over Erick Deztroyer last April 12 in Singapore. This is his first time fighting in the Philippines since beating Shota Hayashi in 2017.

The 29-year-old Pungluang should give Magsayo his money’s worth because he has fought some of the best. He owns a win over AJ Banal and Ryo Akaho, and fought but lost to Marlon Tapales, Tomoki Kameda, Czar Amonsot and Paulus Ambunda.

Magsayo is 19-0 with 14 knockouts, while Pungluang is 53-6 with 35 knockouts. (EKA)
