Village councilman shot dead in Guihulngan City

A VILLAGE councilman was killed on August 28 at Sitio Tamwag, Barangay Mabunga, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.

The victim was identified as Ramonito Handumon, 34, village watchman and a resident of Mabunga.

Based on police reports, the victim was sitting and watching a volleyball game in said sitio when the alleged members of the armed New People’s Army (NPA) shot Handumon in the different parts of his body causing his instantaneous death.

After the killing, the NPA rebels fled toward the direction of Sitio Kalattat, Barangay Mabunga, while the victim was brought to St. Francis Funeral Homes by the Guihulngan City rescue team.

The 94th Infantry Battalion in a statement strongly condemns the terroristic act by the NPAs, which is a violation of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL). “Such brutality is a disregard to human life and disrespect to human rights, killing innocent civilians without remorse or hesitation,” Lieutenant Colonel Randy Pagunuran, commanding officer of the 94th Infantry Battalion said.

“I call on for the other sectors of the society to strongly condemn the killing of Ramonito Handumon. The killings should be stopped now. I further call on the citizens of Guihulngan City to be more vigilant and report to us any information or activities of the NPAs in your area,” he added. (TDE)
