PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan -- Davao City fell short of the gold medal in five championship matches held in separate venues at the close of the Batang Pinoy 2019 National Championships here Saturday, August 31.

Unbeaten girls 13 futsal team, which has never tasted defeat in the double elimination format event, was humbled by Pontevedra of Negros Occidental, 1-3, at the Western Philippines University covered court.

Davao, according to coach Rachelle “Ching” delos Reyes, started the ball rolling by hitting the first goal. But Pontevedra, which lost to Davao (1-2) in the first round of the elimination, staged a huge comeback to seal the title.

The Davao boys 15 squad also suffered the same fate having bowed to Cebu, 0-3, in their titular showdown.

The boys 13 team secured the bronze after toppling Davao del Norte in their battle for third.

Over at the ESJ Badminton court, girls badminton 15-under doubles tandem of Khea Montanez and Maris Franceska Almazan of Davao City figured in a series of lead changes and deadlocks but Malolos, Bulacan pair Mikaela Dorega and Kimberly Lao escaped past them, 21-17, to take the first set.

Crucial errors, however, hurt the Dabawenyas as their rivals went on to wrap up the match, 21-14.

Almazan, 14, a Grade 9 student of Davao Chong Hua High School, in an interview with SunStar Davao after the game, said, “Mahirap mahanapan ng butas pero nakadikit parin kami sa first set.”

Davao City National High School (DCNHS) Grade 9 student Montanez, 15, added, “Sa second set nahirapan na kami kasi nakita na nila ang weakness namin at wala kaming palo. Pa down lahat ng bola nila.”

Both, however, agreed that winning a silver in their first and last Batang Pinoy national bid was special. “Masarap ang feeling,” Montanez said.

Meanwhile, Dabawenya netter Theresa Claire Nacito absorbed a heavy 0-6, 1-6, beating from Jenaila Rose Prulla of Del Monte in Bulacan in their girls tennis single finals held at Palawan National School.

John Roddick Litang also lost the boys tennis single championship match at the hands of Exequiel Mari Jucutan of Pangasinan, 4-6, 1-6, at the Asia B Sports Club.
