Governor eyes home study for flood-affected students

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- To compensate for lost school days, Governor Dennis Pineda said he is looking into the possibility of allowing home-studying to students affected by flooding.

Pineda said he has been in dialogue with the Department of Education (DepEd) to discuss alternative programs to ensure that the students’ education will not be compromised following class suspensions during the rainy season.

“I had a dialogue with DepEd para dun sa mga programs para dun sa mga bata na hindi nakakapasok sa school dahil sa baha. Baka mag-home study muna sila para tuluy-tuloy pa rin iyong pag-aaral nila (I had a dialogue with DepEd to discuss the programs for the children who are not able to go to school due to flooding. Maybe we can allow home-studying in the meantime so their learning will be continuous),” he said.

Pineda disclosed that schools located in coastal areas, particularly in Macabebe and Masantol towns, suspension of classes usually lasts for several weeks during rainy seasons.

Although the DepEd usually adjusts the school calendar to make up for the suspended classes, Pineda said there is still some days that are left out which could’ve been utilized for the learning of the children.

“Priority natin parati ang edukasyon ng mga bata, pero affected pa rin sila sa flood problem natin. So habang hinihintay pa natin matapos iyong mga programs natin laban sa baha, kailangan gumawa din ng aksyon para hindi mapabayaan pag-aaral nila (Our priority is always the education of the children but it is still affected due to our flooding problem so while we are waiting for the completion of our flood-mitigation programs, we also need to implement actions to ensure that the education sector will not be disregarded),” he said.

Pineda said the provincial government and DepEd are still analyzing the proposal to ensure that it will not affect the regular classes of children.
