SLU turns back BCNHS in twin tourney opener

DEFENDING champion Saint Louis University (SLU)-Laboratory High School (LHS) battled a nine point deficit early in the pay off canto, as it opened its title retention bid in the 34th SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo which officially kicks off at the Easter College Gym.

SLU-LHS waxed hot in the final period, uncorking a searing 20-7 run to post a hard earned 80-68 win to turn back Baguio City National High School (BCNHS) to open their campaign on a high note in the paserelle division.

Jan Dua and Nathaniel Tomeldan conspired in the fourth period as they led

the squad with 22 and 21 each despite SLU trailing most of the time in the ball game.

After trading baskets in the first canto, City High posted a 13-17 lead after 10 minutes of play.

SLU then played catch-up ball game tying the score at 18 all in the second period with a Miguel Pinlac drive.

City High then countered with 17-4 run to post their biggest lead in the ball game at 22-35 punctuated by a triple with least than a minute left first half.

SLU finally ended their scoring drought after Lawrence Piamonte scored on a lay-up to trim City High's lead at the end of the second period, 24-35.

Dua then carried SLU in his shoulder scoring eight on a 10-0 run as the Navy Base squad pulled off to within one, 34-35 with less than six minutes of play in the third quarter.

But City High doused cold water on SLU's rally as Sam Dharwin Edades scored on a triple for a 34-38 lead before closing the third with a 42-48 advantage.

SLU then made it 49-51 ball game but City High turned back the favor with a 9-0 run to post a 50-59 advantage with less than seven minutes in the final period.

Slowly but surely, SLU trimmed the lead with Tomeldan scoring the tying basket at 64 all with Dua firing the go ahead basket at 66-64 with less than three minutes left in the final canto.

Jusrhylle De Vera then scored two free throws as City High tied the ball game anew at 66 al but SLU fired back with a 14-2 run to seal the victory.

De Vera top scored for City High with 16 markers as Ricky Thomas Tomanan and David Japeth Esgana added 15 and 10 points each.
