Collecting garbage a serious job: Cortes

MANDAUE City Mayor Jonas Cortes has reminded over 100 garbage collectors during a meeting to take their job seriously and always gather rubbish from all corners of the city’s 27 barangays.

“I told them that their salaries are from the taxpayers. It was a simple reminder. They should not neglect residential areas,” he said.

Before he called for the meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, Cortes had toured some barangays; he found garbage littered along the streets.

Aside from wanting a cleaner Mandaue City, Cortes also wants to solve the flooding problems. The mayor wants his personnel to check the drainage system in the city.

Cortes plans to coordinate with Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella and Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony Gullas to solve the flooding and traffic woes in the three local government units.

The mayor also wants to deploy eco-wardens—the volunteers or barangay personnel tasked to apprehend persons who violate environmental laws, including those who throw their garbage improperly.

Some barangays, he said, lack garbage trucks and eco-wardens, but he promised to call for a meeting with village chiefs within this week to address these problems. FROM ANV OF SUPERBALITA CEBU / KAL
