RESIDENTS and business establishments in Lapu-Lapu City will now have to be more mindful of the cleanliness of their surroundings.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan wants the strict implementation of City Ordinance 484-97 or the Comprehensive Environment and Sanitation Code of Lapu-Lapu CIty.
The ordinance empowers the City Environmental and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) to issue notices to residents and businesses to clean or remove garbage that is found five meters from their residences or establishments.
Chan said he wants it implemented to keep Lapu-Lapu City clean.
Last July, when Chan assumed office, he ordered barangay officials to remove the uncollected garbage within their barangays after receiving complaints through social media.

Based on the ordinance, first-time violators will be fined P300, while those caught violating for the second time will pay P500. Three-time offenders will pay P1,000. Those who refuse to pay may face a 30-day jail sentence.
“We already distributed notices last Aug. 22, and until now, Cenro is going around to distribute them,” said Chan.
Chan also urged the coastal barangays to conduct a cleanup after garbage washed ashore due to the Habagat (southwest monssoon).
