ONE of the newest Asian additions to the lineup of Marvel superheroes was finally introduced to Cebuanos at SM Seaside City Cebu last week and it couldn’t have been more fitting.
Wave, created by Filipino Marvel artist Leinil Yu, is a female superhero with telekinetic powers that manipulate water. The kicker in her profile is not only that she is the first Filipino Marvel superhero but also a Cebuano (from Mactan Island), which many find complimentary with her powers since Cebu is a known port and beach province in the Philippines. The existence of Wave sends a powerful message to society as she not only represents the Philippines, but also specifically empowers the population of Filipinos from the province—being a “probinsyana” herself.

“I think the creation of Wave is amazing. She’s a good role model, especially for young Filipinos everywhere, to see us being represented in mainstream media—let alone a franchise as big as Marvel.
