ONE of the newest Asian additions to the lineup of Marvel superheroes was finally introduced to Cebuanos at SM Seaside City Cebu last week and it couldn’t have been more fitting.

Wave, created by Filipino Marvel artist Leinil Yu, is a female superhero with telekinetic powers that manipulate water. The kicker in her profile is not only that she is the first Filipino Marvel superhero but also a Cebuano (from Mactan Island), which many find complimentary with her powers since Cebu is a known port and beach province in the Philippines. The existence of Wave sends a powerful message to society as she not only represents the Philippines, but also specifically empowers the population of Filipinos from the province—being a “probinsyana” herself.

Curious about looking beyond the technical aspect of what the new character represents, Zup has spoken to some of its readers about how they feel about Wave. Here is a glance at what they have said:

“I think the creation of Wave is amazing. She’s a good role model, especially for young Filipinos everywhere, to see us being represented in mainstream media—let alone a franchise as big as Marvel. She’s a simple girl named Pearl Pangan, born and raised in Mactan, who was always good at swimming ‘til a freak accident turned her into a superhero. She shows us that heroes can come from anywhere—all you need is some courage—and that the will to want to do what is good and right is something we should all aspire to have.” - Samantha Yu, 26

“I think Wave, is a great addition to the Marvel Universe! Her backstory about being a young, impoverished swimmer from Mactan who joined scientific studies just to earn money for her family is one that really resonates with us Filipinos. I think it’s great that they’re showing our country, and culture so well, not only by hiring a Filipino artist to design her, but also through her name, Pearl Pangan, and her obvious Filipino values. (I also really like that she’s Cebuana and not just ‘Filipina’ with no proper origins).” - Sassha Yu, 24

“I really like that Marvel has a Cebuana superhero! I feel like people from third world countries and provinces are often looked down upon, so it is nice that we have someone to look up to!” -Charm Gallego, 23

“I am actually proud to finally see a Filipino superhero hailing from Cebu City and the fact that she has been co-created by a fellow Cebuano. I hope to see her represent the Philippines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon! “ - Rolan Alberto, 31, artist
