Solon: Informed fitness and health (Conclusion)

Fitness Station

GOOD day, everyone!

Today, I’ll wrap up my series on being an informed fitness consumer. I want to focus on habits and traits that will help one become more informed in their health and fitness journey.

Be skeptical.

In a healthy manner that is! Always approach things with caution and weigh the good and the bad. When you hear someone say “running is bad for your knees,” ask yourself, “Why?” or “Why not?” And always seek more information on the subject.

Focus on the tried and true.

There are principles on fitness and health that have stood the test of time. In fitness, progression is key. For nutrition, we know that fruits and vegetables should be a mainstay and make up majority of your diet. These principles outweigh any advice like “no eating after 6 p.m. to lose flabs.”

Everything is a tool. Just use the right one.

One doesn’t use a hammer to drive down a screw, or a screwdriver to hammer a nail. In exercise and health, strategies exist to optimize the attainment of one’s goals.

An exercise professional’s experience and expertise are both important.

Both the academic and applied aspects of a fitness professional must be scrutinized. In Australia, only coaches who are ASCA certified can work with athletes in the weight room. The purpose of this is to standardize the application of the profession. The Philippines is still a long way from that but having more informed fitness consumers may change the status quo.
