BARANGAY officials of Tabunok in Talisay City were alarmed of reports that garbage are being dumped at the Mananga River by vehicles passing the bridge.
Tabunok Barangay Captain Benjie Cabigas said he received these reports from residents living under the bridge.
Residents noticed that vehicles passing the bridge stopped and threw garbage below usually around midnight or at dawn, Cabigas said.
He said he already asked for police assistance to monitor these activities and to arrest people responsible for garbage dumping.
“We are calling on these people to stop what they are doing and to be sensitive to the people living in the area, who get accused of polluting the river,” he said.
Cabigas said he already talked to Talisay City Police Director Major Orlando Carag Jr. on the plan to declare the barangay as the next barangay disciple zone.
The village chief said the clean-up drive at the Mananga River continues as they are now organizing a purok system to maintain the waterway’s cleanliness.
Cabigas admitted that a number of houses near the river have no toilets and these pose a big challenge in the clean-up drive.
He said the barangay is now building communal facilities for the 300 families in Mananga 1 and 2.
Meanwhile, clearing operations along the streets of the barangay, especially within the vicinity of the public market, continues.
He said despite the continued implementation of the clearing operation there are still those who continue to display their goods on the sidewalk.
