Injury ends Araneta’s bid

CHRISTIAN Araneta suffered his first career loss following an unfortunate shoulder injury in his International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight title eliminator with Mexican Daniel Valladares last Sept. 8, 2019 at the Arena Jose Sulaiman in Monterrey, Mexico.

“We lost. His shoulder dropped. We were hitting the opponent, his nose was bleeding and his eyes were starting to swell,” Omega Boxing Gym head coach Jinggoy Junco told SunStar Cebu. “We want to thank the Cebuano boxing fans. From the bottom of our hearts, we will be back stronger. The breaks just didn’t go our way.”

It was a very competitive fight when it lasted but at the end of the fourth round, Araneta seemed to be bothered by his right shoulder.

Araneta couldn’t continue with the fight and Valladares was awarded with the stoppage win.

“We’re going back to the drawing board. We’ll come back stronger. We’ll make him rest and have a full recovery,” said Junco.

Araneta’s injury was on the same shoulder that was operated on back in 2017. Araneta tore a muscle on his right shoulder two years ago that sidelined him for close to a year.

Araneta dropped 17-1 with 14 knockouts, while Valladares improved to 21-1 with 13 knockouts. With the win Valladares earned mandatory challenger status to IBF light flyweight king Felix Alvarado. (EKA)
