Espedilla: Is soda water safe for my health?

DEAR Dr. Fritz,

Greetings Doc Fritz. I would like to ask if soda water is harmful to our health. Usually after dinner when it is time for me to relax and watch TV, I would crave for soft drinks but since I promised myself to control my intake of sugary drinks, I opted for soda water instead. My brother-in-law had mentioned that soda water causes cancer. This is why there is this concern going through my head.

I hope my question will be answered. Thank you and God bless!

Dear Hot Charlie of Davao,

I see why your brother-in-law told you that soda water causes cancer, as a 2009 case report states that the acids and sugars in these drinks have acidogenic and carcinogenic potential and can cause erosion of the enamel. But, recent studies have shown that it is not really that harmful for dental health and seems to have no effect on bone health. It is also good for digestion, may improve swallowing, increase feelings of fullness and reduce constipation. It may have also beneficial effects on cholesterol, inflammation and blood sugar, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease. However, more studies are necessary to confirm this.

I am glad that you avoid soft drinks. The truth is, even if soft drinks don’t directly increase the risk of cancer, but, they are high in calories. And drinking a lot of them can gradually pile on your pounds and an unhealthy bodyweight is one of the most important preventable causes of cancer.

Here are some tips on carbonated water. Always read the ingredient list and look out for additives, such as sodium and sugar to avoid the negative consequences.

In sum, there is currently no evidence that soda water is bad for you. It is a calorie-free beverage that is pleasurable and preferred by a lot of people over water. So, if you enjoy it, go and relish every drop.

Good luck!

Dr. Fritz
