THE Cebu City Council has asked Mayor Edgardo Labella to consider using solar power in City Hall, in public schools, sport centers and all 80 barangay halls in Cebu City.
By using renewable energy sources, the City Government can contribute to the protection of the environment, the Council said in a resolution it approved on Sept. 3, 2019.
Councilor Phillip Zafra, author of the resolution, said considering that renewable energy such as solar power is a fast emerging source of energy around the globe, it is high time that government agencies began to shift towards this direction.
“Derived from the heat of the sun, solar power can best be utilized in our setting, being a tropical country where the sun is readily available and does not require any other source but the sun itself. Likewise, solar energy inflicts no damage on the environment,” the resolution read.
Since solar power is a clean and ready source of energy, the Council said the City can start utilizing solar power in the public schools and City Government offices, including City Hall.
He requested the Local School Board to prioritize the public schools for the adoption of a Solar Energy Program. JJL
