SM Seaside City holds water conservation workshop

A THREE-DAY water conservation technology workshop was recently held at SM Seaside City in Cebu City.

The event, which took place at the Seaview Wing, was envisioned by Creative Cebu, which planned to install a water tower at the Sky Park of SM Seaside City in celebration of the Cebu Design Week on Sept. 8-15, 2019.

The initiative of Creative Cebu is dubbed “Bamboo Buildathon Workshop.”

The event invited professionals and innovation enthusiasts to learn how to build bamboo water towers.

Warka Water Towers, an Ethiopian company, inspired the workshop. Its tower has a mesh wrapped around the bamboo structure, which collects rainwater and water from damp air. The collected water goes into a collection surface and a tank.

Basic information on bamboo species in the Philippines was also discussed during the workshop. Other topics include the making of bamboo joints, facts about the bamboo industry, and the detailed discussions on the building of bamboo water collectors.

The bamboo water tower will be in the creative hub, which is located at the Sky Park Art Walk—the pilot art installation realized by the Newseum of Design (Newd) in preparation for its launch in 2020.

Sky Park’s creative hub is Newd’s flagship action item in Cebu’s official bid for the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization Creative Cities Network.

The creative hub is divided into two phases: the installation of bamboo water towers and the creation of gallery centers or cabanas, which are designed in modernist exterior and sculptural interior creating spaces. (PR)
