Palace welcomes conviction of Joanna Demafelis's employer

MALACAÑANG on Tuesday, September 10, welcomed the ruling of a Syrian criminal court that found the former employer of Joanna Demafelis guilty of murder.

Demafelis was a Filipina household worker whose remains were found in a freezer in her employer's home in Kuwait.

"We welcome that news, which means justice has been meted to the culprits, to the killers," Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo told a press conference.

Demafelis worked in Kuwait in 2014 as a domestic helper, but went missing in 2016.

On February 9, 2018, Demafelis's tortured body was found stored in a freezer in an abandoned apartment in Kuwait's Al Shaab district.

The discovery of Demafelis's body led to the arrest of her employers, Lebanese national Nader Essam Assaf and his wife, Syrian national Mona Hassoun.

Assaf was placed under held in Lebanon, while Hassoun was detained in Syria.

On Monday, September 9, the Department of Foreign Affairs announced that Hassoun was found guilty of murder by the Syrian District Criminal Court. (SunStar Philippines)
