Gale warning up over parts of CV; 9 boat trips canceled

AT LEAST nine boat trips departing from Cebu were canceled on Friday, Sept. 13, 2019, after a gale warning was raised in some parts of Central Visayas.

Rains were experienced in some parts of Cebu Friday, a result of the combination of the southwest monsoon (habagat) rains and the trough or the extension of the clouds of Tropical Depression (TD) Marilyn.

Because of this, a gale warning was raised at 5 a.m. Friday in southern Bohol, Siquijor and southern Negros Oriental.

As of 10 a.m. Friday, the Philippine Coast Guard Central Visayas suspended the trips of vessels with 250 gross tonnage bound for or departing from the affected areas.

The trips from Cebu to Ormoc in Leyte, Cebu to Getafe in Bohol, Cebu to Tagbilaran in Bohol and from Camotes, Cebu to Ormoc, Leyte were canceled.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, Cebu can expect isolated rain showers as TD Marilyn is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration Central Visayas chief Al Quiblat said as of 5 p.m. Friday, TD Marilyn was located 1,045 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes.

It maintained its strength of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) and maximum center winds of 70 kph gustiness.

Quiblat said although there’s a possibility TD Marilyn could become a tropical storm within the next 24 hours, Cebu could still expect fair weather with isolated rain showers.

“As of 5 p.m. Friday, there is a gale warning in Southern Bohol, Southern Negros Oriental, Siquijor, Panay Island and Eastern Visayas (particularly Samar and Leyte area). But the rest of Central Visayas, in Cebu, there’s no gale warning,” he said.

Quiblat added that the gale warning may be lifted on Saturday, Sept. 14. (WBS, with HBL of Superbalita Cebu/LRC)
