Cortes, Labella lead cleanup of Mahiga creek today

THE mayors of Cebu City and Mandaue City will lead today, Sept. 14, 2019, the start of a massive cleanup of Mahiga Creek, which they hope will prevent flooding in some parts of the cities during heavy rains.

Before the cleanup starts at 6 a.m., Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella and Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes will hold a ceremonial meeting at the boundary of the two cites to express their commitment to clean the creek.

Mahiga Creek sits at the boundary of the two cities, specifically Barangays Subangdaku in Mandaue and Mabolo in Cebu City. In Cebu City, the creek crosses Barangays Mabolo, Apas and Kasambagan.

“We will be relentless in our pursuit of clean waterways,” Labella said.

Like in the cleanup of the Guadalupe River on Aug. 17 where 70 tons of garbage was collected, the City Government’s 5,000 employees will again be required to participate in today’s activity.

Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office head John Jigo Dacua said the cleanup is a joint project of the two local government units.

Dacua reminded the volunteers and the employees to bring their own protective wear such as boots, masks and gloves and tools such as rakes. (JJL)
