Weight limit on La Trinidad bridge reiterated

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reiterated the weight limit of vehicles passing the bridge along the Baguio-Bontoc road in Km. 6 in La Trinidad, Benguet.

During the Benguet Provincial Board regular session, DPWH Benguet 1st District Assistant District Engr. Benedicta Mendoza said that due to the current condition of the bridge, a five-ton weight limit for vehicles crossing the bridge is implemented.

The engineer said coordination with the central office to fast-track funding of the bridge deck is now being done.

Mendoza said they are also requesting the presence of police officers for vehicular traffic assistance in the monitoring of vehicles to not exceed the carrying capacity.

Board Member Florencio Bentres suggested to put signages that incorporate the number of tons allowed and include what type of vehicles are allowed to traverse the bridge.

Previously, the DPWH informed the local government of La Trinidad that the bridge has showed signs of weakening, with transverse cracks and scouring on the concrete deck.

The DPWH then installed a steel plate, which was placed to cover the hole near the end of the bridge, and announced to pre-empt any untoward incident, advise motorists to pass with caution with trucks, buses and other vehicles weighing more than five tons diverted to Shilan-Beckel Road.

The bridge connects La Trinidad and Baguio City to neighboring towns of Benguet and provinces in the Cordillera.

The bridge, which is near the Provincial Capitol, was built in 1961.
