Solon: Four popular weight loss strategies

Good day, everybody! There are a lot of dietary strategies nowadays for losing weight. I wanted to highlight four and what their benefits are:

Juicing and Detoxification

Dieters go on a juice diet and take no solid food. During the dietary period, dieters experience rapid weight loss. Studies show though that when normal eating patterns are resumed, the weight is gained back. Some people feel “better” during the diet period. This may be caused by an increase in the delivery of micronutrients.

Ketogenic Diet

This is, perhaps, one of the more popular diet in recent times: High Fat, moderate protein and no carbohydrates. A lot of people have lost weight with this dietary strategy. Some question its sustainability. There have also been conflicting reports of those having better health outcomes, while others have experienced an increase in Total Cholesterol and LDL (bad cholesterol).

Intermittent Fasting

The proponent of this protocol say that fasting for 16 hours and eating for eight, promotes weight loss, better health, autophagy (self-healing) and a shift in the utilization of fat for energy. For some, this is very sustainable, as it only entails skipping breakfast and eating dinner earlier than usual.

High Intensity Interval Training

Perhaps a fitness buzzword, HIIT has taken fitness by storm. Six sets of 30 seconds of intense work, twice a week, has been shown to improve endurance, fitness, improve health outcomes and speed weight loss.

What’s common with all these strategies is the need to restrict the intake calories, and expend more calories with our daily activities. When choosing a diet, consult your doctor, talk to a registered dietician and choose a strategy that you can sustain in your daily lifestyle.
