THE University of San Carlos Warriors bucked a slow start and overcame an early double-digit deficit to take down the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, 62-55, in the 2019 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, September 14, at the Cebu Coliseum.

Now back from a one-game suspension, Roosvelt Jelliangao poured in 16 points, four rebounds and two assists to spark the Warriors to the victory and improve their win-loss record to 2-1.

Down 33-40, USC uncorked 14 straight points behind Jules Langres’ eight-point cluster to help them take a 47-42 lead into the fourth period. The game remained with USJ-R even taking the lead, 52-51, after Johndel Robles nailed a triple at the top of the arc.

But Jelliangao was undeterred as he scored a floater, a three-pointer and a stepback jumper as the shot clock expired to give USC a 58-52 lead with 1:57 to go. Sommy Managor then canned a free-throw line jumper while Froilan Mangubat split his charities to put the win on ice for the Warriors.

Managor chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists for USC.

Point guard Renz Solomon scored 17 points to lead the way for USJ-R, which dropped to 1-1.
