CHRISTIAN Lumapas would have been a shoo-in for the starting 11 but tragedy changed that.

But in one of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu’s (SHS-AdC) most challenging games, forward Hans Paglinawan made sure the team, and the supporters, remember who they are fighting for after scoring the lone goal against a game Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC), 1-0, in the Magis Eagles debut of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. season.

Taking advantage of a sleepy DBTC, Paglinawan one-footed a freekick to the lower corner five minutes in as the defending champion took the lead despite the relentless DBTC attack.

As he walked back to the center court for the restart, he took one glance at the team’s supporters and kissed his right sleeve, where, like all his teammates, the No. 11 is printed.

No. 11 is Lumapas the spitfire winger whose memory the Magis Eagles are dedicating this season for.

And in the rest of the game, it seems lady luck was smiling on the Eagles as they overcame a determined DBTC team that was out searching for its first win.

Earl Berciles got a couple of chances, one of his left foot, but couldn’t beat the keeper, while Kristi Ybañez had an open shot off a bad clearance but couldn’t convert.

Carsten Pumareja also got his chance from a feed by Josh Asignar but his shot inside the box went straight to the keeper.

The win puts Ateneo at second place in the standings, next to the streaking University of San Jose-Recoletos, which beat the University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED), 2-1, in the first game thanks to Dustin Ramirez’s brace in the ninth and 32nd minutes.

Louie Arreglo got the lone USC goal in the 51st.

USJ-R leads the standings at six points, while Ateneo is second at three. DBTC and USC-BED have one point each but USC is slight ahead, having scored one goal in two games, while DBTC had none. DBTC and USC-BED played to a scoreless draw last week.

On Sept. 15, USC-BED will face Ateneo, while DBTC will take on guest team Sisters of Mary School-Boystown. In the college division, USJ-R will face USC, while the Univesity of the Visayas will take on the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation. (ML)
